Most crops currently grown on Earth are not really practical for space or Mars dwellers in the first phases of settlement / exploration.
Future space crops must have some common characteristics, differentiating them from normal Earth crops:
- Short height
- High yield, with very good nutritional values
- Failure-resistance
- High adaptability to varying conditions of environment (light, temperature, water, nutrients, toxic conditions and more)
