Hypoxia is the lack of sufficient oxygen. Any living thing deprived of oxygen or exposed to an atmosphere with an insufficient ratio of oxygen to other soluble gases will eventually suffer symptoms of hypoxia.

Symptoms

In humans, symptoms of hypoxia typically vary depending on the partial pressure of oxygen present in air.

Oxygen Pressure (mb) Symptoms
200 None (Normal Range)
120 to 150 Loss of muscular coordination for skilled movements
100 to 140 Faulty judgement and rapid fatigue
60 to 80 Rapid unconsciousness, recovery possible with quick treatment
60 or less Death occurs in 8 minutes or less

Exposure to an oxygen partial pressures of less than 120mb, over an extended time, can eventually lead to organ failure and death if not corrected.
